What have we learned from the Premiership this week?

What have we learned from the Premiership this week?

I'd love to say this is part one of a regular series, but I'll end up forgetting, so have it as a one off and I'll see where it goes....

Dan Robson is bloody good!

4 tries in less than an hour for the Wasps scrum half, his sniping try up the touchline was sensational, fleet footed and smart at the breakdown, Dan must be on the radar for Eddie Jones'  England squad soon!

TMO's earn their cash!

I'd imagine the TMO's in certain matches got more time in play than most of the substitutes. Love the video refs or not, it generally gives clarity to situations, the Ben Morgan try for Gloucester vs Chiefs a perfect example, looked to the whole world like it had gone forward from a hand, but the various replays rightly showed it had hit a knee. There will always be a grey area in how certain refereeing teams interpret certain  incidents, and they usually get 99% of decisions spot on!

The form books mean nothing.

Exeter lost to Gloucester and London Irish beat Quins in a pair of tremendous rugby matches, I would imagine very few people predicted both of them results, the bookies certainly didn't! Irish and Gloucester are many peoples picks to be in the relegation dogfight this season, but on the opening week form, it doesn't look likely. The Exiles have signed brilliantly as well as having some top class youngsters in the squad, and Gloucester have 9 out injured already this season, both should improve during the season, as will the teams they beat, but a few sides will now be looking at these sides in a very different light following their impressive wins.

Fans are a fickle bunch

This one nearly got a blog of it's own.... but following several Facebook fan groups is always enlightening.... There was a Gloucester group who were predicting the end of the club following a fringe side losing to Leinster pre season, the same group now rejoice the future being bright following one victory....

Likewise on the Premiership page and one of the Saints pages, I saw literally dozens of people calling for the head of Mallinder Sr and telling people Mallinder Jr isn't premiership standard.

Nothing is settled in week one, unfortunately as fans, there is little we can do but cheer on the rugby rollercoaster the varied teams provide for us! Social media is a great communication platform, but the flipside is that it also gives dickheads a soap box..... (like me!)

Rugby Union is all kicking, hey.....

Gloucester vs Exeter - 7 tries, 7 conversions. Points scored - 49

Newcastle v Worcester - 5 tries, 4 conversions, 3 penalties - Points scored - 43

London Irish v Harlequins - 8 tries, 5 conversions, 6 penalties - Points scored - 68

Wasps v Sale Sharks - 12 tries, 11 conversions, 1 penalty - Points scored - 85

Saracens vs Northampton - 12 tries, 8 conversions, 1 penalty - Points scored - 79

Leicester vs Bath - 6 tries, 4 conversions, 4 penalties - Points scored - 50

50 tries, 39 conversions and just 15 penalties.

We often see it thrown around that it's all kicking in Union, and whilst sometimes close games or bad running conditions mean that happens, it's not the norm anymore as most sides are prolific try scorers these days. So let's celebrate weeks like this where every match was a tryfest!

Team of the week - Saracens They looked fighting fit and ready to challenge this season, the first half against Saints was so impressive, although they took their foot off the gas for the second half, the damage was done! Oh. And they still have a fair few Internationals to come back into the squad. Be afraid.....

Player of the week - Dan Robson After scoring 4 tries, there was no way I was giving this to anyone else!

Game of the week - Gloucester vs Exeter Had everything you'd want in a match really, two sides going hammer and tongs, the underlying stories like Kvesic's return to Kingsholm, the underachievers vs the champs, new coach vs established coach at the top of his game..... and a try in 'overtime' to clinch it. Instant classic

Let's see if I can keep this as a weekly blog.... no promises, but I will try my bestest!!! Alternatively, if anyone would like to write a similar piece for any other league, you know where to send it!!
