Some of you may remember the plea which was sent out on Twitter back in January by a young Welsh rugby player with size 21 feet. Carl Griffiths, from Trimsaran Rugby Club, couldn't find boots in his size and was going to give up rugby because of it. The pic below shows the size 18's he had been squeezing into....
Carl was repeatedly told that a size 21 boot didn't exist and simply couldn't be made!
In true rugby style (and something we LOVE here at #rugbyunited) someone came to the rescue.
Step forward Adidas.
The company who boast ambassadors such as Sam Warburton, Alex Corbisiero, Ugo Monye and many more, went away and made Carl a custom pair of boots. Size 21 isn’t something you can just pick up in the shops you know! They took on the project in complete secret, designing 2 pairs of their Kakari boots in the required size!
Using the power of social media (and roping in some of their ambassadors), Adidas broke the news to Carl and his rugby club with a few cryptic tweets:
Little did the club know, Adidas were on their way to personally deliver the boots to Carl; with none other than Sam Warburton. The Wales captain made the trip to Trimsaran RFC (for those of you, like me who have no idea where this is….Just outside Llanelli) to surprise the whole squad and present Carl with his new, large, boots!
Speaking from the club, Sam said:
“As soon as the team at adidas told me about this story I bit their hand off to be involved. I’ve had my fair share of injuries and breaks from the game over the years and I know it’s one of the worst feelings you can have.
“It’s great to have been involved in getting Carl back on the rugby field and you can tell it means a lot to him and his teammates. I’m sure they’ll be reminding him that he has some big boots to fill now though!”
We think this embodies everything that #rugbyunited stands for. Bringing players, fans, companies, the rugby world together through the power of social media. Congrats Adidas, you made a Welsh man very happy!
